Bundle of 11 Clapping Beats

April 18th, 2009 by SmokeyMaverick

My lack of belting out tunes in key is compensated somewhat by my affinity to clapping. It’s energtic and easy to keep the beat (thus appearing very musically sound). So it goes to figure that here at SmokeyMaverick: Clapping + Music = $$$$.

If I were to make a list of Top 11 Clapping songs, Scokta would just (correctly) criticize my picks. So without further ado, Smokey Maverick’s Bundle of 11 Clapping Beats (in absolutely no particular order):

11. Born to be your Man – Birdmonster

Catchy song. Clapping element is only really fully leveraged in the chorus though.

10. Cobrastyle – Teddybears, ft. Mad Cobra

Couldn’t find the straight up Cobrastyle version that just the Teddybear band does. That’s my favorite, with them running around in their standard bear-head suits (would be a great Halloween costume). Then the version ft. Mad Cobra is not permitted to be embedded. Lucky for us, the good folks at Heineken allowed us to embed their video – go figure. Doesn’t hurt that I dance like this when I’m in an elevator all by myself. Side note: The band is from Sweden and call themselves “Teddybears” to counter the popular fad of naming your band something ultra hardcore. As my one good buddy pointed out, kinda like the Mitch Hedberg joke.

9. Send Him Back (Pilooski re-edit) – The Pointer Sisters

Big ups to HonestApe for introducing this song to me. As he challenged all of us: Go ahead and try not to tap your feet to this…

8. Gods Gonna Cut You Down – Johnny Cash

From his resurgant American Recordings set comes a song by JR that emphasises the slow, methodical clapping, which reinforces the songs idea that no matter what, we’ll all methodically have to pay the piper one day. Interesting montage of celebrates set to this song.

7. Daft Punk Is Playing at My House – LCD Soundsystem

R$ lead me to this beaut. In this clip, Paul Shaffer and crew lay down the clapping beat.

6. People C’mon – Delta Spirit

Gotta stick with this one, clapping doesn’t happen until the last chorus, but it’s a pretty good pay off.

5. That’s Not My Name – The Ting Tings

Solid band – check out some of their other songs if you dig this beat.

4. Sleepyhead – Passion Pit

Kayne West-ie sounding at the beginning of this song. Band introduced to me by Papa Maverick.

3. Ways To Make It Through The Wall – Los Campesinos!

Los Campesinos! most defiantly has their own, unique sound. One of my new favorite bands. Another one with the clapping in the chorus.

2. What I Like About You – The Romantics

Oldie but good – big clapping emphasis at the beginning to kick off the song right.

1. Illegal Tender – Louis XIV
Ok, so this was not an ordered list, but its no coincidence that Illegal Tender is listed at #1. Couldn’t find it on YouTabe, but uploaded it for yinz guys below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Other noteable hand smacking beats:
Golden Age – TV on the Radio
Hey Teacher – Louis XIV
Devil NightsElectric Six
Heart it Races – Architecture In Helsinki
