We don’t hold to many things near and dear to our heart here at Smokey Maverick, but those few, lucky values that find themselves in our good standing are treated like kings.
This is why I feel the need to highlight the song Beer Drinkers, which is a live cover by Drive-by Truckers of Tab Whisenhunt’s song Nice Guys (and good ole Tab was probably influenced a bit by ZZ Top).
For Beer Drinkers touches upon many (but not all) of a good Smokey Mavierck’s values. Do yourself a favor, and play the song while you digest the values highlighted below…

[Opening, spoken introduction]
Great sincere interaction with the crowd present for a live show. It’s easy to imagine your local, neighborhood bar and the fact that all the regulars have a warm history with the song, when they confirm their screaming part of “We go, we go, we go!” The crowd plays along throughout the song, happily adding their lyric at the proper spot and singing along merrily.
[Chorus] Yes we are beer drinkers, yes we are hell raisers
But we’re still the nicest guys you’ll ever know
Just because someone enjoys frequenting a local bar, where drinks are served, familiar friends are found and the occasional (or common) hell is raised, this does not make that person ‘bad’ or some kind of detriment to society. Many of the locals found in neighborhood bars are great people (albeit some neighborhood bars have their strictly defined regular crowd, and few outsiders venture into said bar; in this case, it might take a while to warm up to the locals – but once you do, chances are you’ll be accepted as you are ever single time you show up). Nice bad asses can, and do, exist.
Here I go out again
I’m gonna go down to Harry’s and meet my friends
Sit down and drink me a pitcher of beer
Just reinforcing the fact that familiar friends is part of what makes life worth living.
George Jones on the ol’ juke box
and a friend of mine just bought a lot of, Wiggle worms for all of us to eat
Nothing new: Juke Boxes are absolutely amazing. Allows one to select and share songs with the crowd. Plus rounds of shots amongst friends is never always a superb start to one’s evening…
Three o’clock, their running us out
I hear one of my buddies shoutin’
Denny’s on Piney, we’re on our way
We’ve all been at this glorious point in our lives at one time or another. The inevitable house lights come up, and its time to move on out. Heeding Semisonic’s advice, instead of heading home like responsible young adults, we extend our nights further, and go get some good grub at any of the local late night eateries around us.
I wake up and feel like sin, tell myself that lie again
Yall tonight I swear I’m not gonna go back out
But when night time rolls around you know where we can all be found
Diggin’ in our pocket’s for another cold beer
And even though we swear off partying with friends after any particularly rough night, find me any twenty- or thirty-something who still doesn’t sign up for the next night of debauchery the first chance they get.
